Roman Armgarth, R&D manager at DP Patterning, is now confirmed as one of the presenting speakers at Productronica 2023 in Munich. Roman Armgarth will present the groundbreaking DPP 360 flex-PCB manufacturing system, with a special focus on the sustainability and inhouse sourcing aspects of the concept.

When: Friday 17 november 2023
Where: Productronica 2023, at the Innovation Forum stage (hall B2, booth 441)

Introducing a multi-billion dollar revolution

The flexible printed circuit board (PCB) market is growing and expected to reach an annual volume of over 50 billion USD by 2030. With this increase, cost and environmental factors become more and more important to the expanding field.

Dry Phase Patterning (DPP) is a novel, yet established, chemical-free, roll-to-roll (R2R) manufacturing technology for flexible PCBs that enables companies to integrate the flex-PCB manufacturing directly with their assembly lines

Roman Armgarth

Sustainable and easily integrated

Resulting benefits are significantly shortened lead times and transport costs, all at a significant price benefit. In contrast to traditional PCB manufacturing, which is based on chemical wet etching, Dry Phase Patterning relies on high precision, mechanical milling at high production speed, giving only a residue of dry metal powder as a byproduct, which is then 100 % recyclable.

The clean and simple processing makes it possible for Dry Phase Patterning production lines to be integrated directly into a component assembly environment.

Several demonstrators on display

Using the mechanical DPP technology any material can be milled, which contrasts with the chemistry in an etching process tailored to one specific metal. Materials like aluminium on PET provide very attractive alternatives for manufacturing of environmentally friendly, low-cost Flex-PCBs. While gradual material, process and logistical improvements have slowly started to reduce emissions in the standard process, studies have shown that by replacing the chemical etching process with the DPP process CO2-emissions of the process chain can be reduced by 99%.

In this presentation I will describe the fundamentals of the DPP technology with a special focus on the sustainability aspects that are accessible with this unique patterning method, Roman Armgarth concludes. The DPP 360 system is up and running in several automotive and antenna applications in the market, some of them are on display at Productronica.

Sustainable electronics from Sweden got great attention at international fair

Together was the key word when Norrköping Science Park, RISE and the companies Ligna Energy, DP Pattering, Cellfion, redox.me, n-Ink and Ynvisible took a place in a joint booth at LOPEC: the world’s largest fair for printed electronics. An important purpose of the attendance was to spread the word about the green electronics developed in Östergötland.

The six companies have all gone from research at Campus Norrköping, Linköping University to becoming internationally acclaimed contenders. Today, several of the companies work with electronics that have the potential to create more sustainable and cost-effective products, and not least products of importance for the future’s energy supply.

During the two day long exhibition, the booth received many visitors and making the trip together proved to be a success factor.

“As a young company, you must prioritize hard among your marketing activities. Sharing a booth therefore created the conditions for us at DP Patterning to exhibit at LOPEC. We received very good ”leads” from LOPEC and at the same time the cooperation in the ”Swedish Pavilion” strengthened our contact with the other companies. It is very valuable because we can help each other with customer contacts and networks that strengthen everyone’s sales and development”, says Tommy Höglund, Sales & Marketing Manager at DP Pattering.

“It was fantastic to see how interested the visitors were in our exhibitors’ products, and by gathering everyone in the same booth, a critical mass of solutions and visitors was created. Many times, the visitors were set on visiting one of our exhibitors, but they often ended up walking the entire circle”, says Eva Eriksson, Project Manager at Norrköping Science Park.

For several of the companies, the visit to Munich and LOPEC also provided valuable contacts with potential customers and network actors.

“LOPEC was a successful exhibition for us that would not have been possible without Norrköping Science Park’s commitment and coordination. As a young startup, we have not had the opportunity to exhibit at such a large event before, and thanks to this opportunity, we have now made many important contacts with potential customers and partners”, says Alexandra Troulioti, Marketing and business developer at Cellfion.

LOPEC became a clear example of the knowledge and innovative power that exists in our region, and if you visited LOPEC, you most likely did not miss the red tower with the Swedish flags at the top.
